Cheap Protein or pay extra for quality protein when looking to build strong muscle?

You may see various cheap protein powders on the market, but the question is are they worth it? Well our team members at bodymaxsupplements.co.uk took it upon ourselves to review such products. On first look the protein powders seem to very reasonably priced, some as much as half the price, but is buying this product false ecconomy? There are many brands now producing a lower grade protein powder to compete with an aggressive market and also developing a cheaper alternative for those who are wanting to spare some cash. We took 4 different protein powders and compared them to high quality protein alternative from the same brands/manufacturer.

If you have tried such products before you may notice that the mix of a high quality protein is far greater than that of a cheaper protein. We found that the protein was very powdery and grainy and didnt mix well unlike that of its higher product. Powder remained in the bottom of the shaker cup like a thick gloopy mush! Not very appertising indeed. Our tasters found the flavours to be very different and left a perculier after taste (some up to an hour later), some scored ok but were no where near the flavour quality of the higher priced protein.

Our panel said that they found themselves using more of the product to try and make the flavour stronger but then you get less servings in the tub. Therefore you end up using more of the product sooner and needing to buy more if thats what you decide to do.

The lower grade protein on average sat heavy on the stomach and made training very difficult due to our bodybuilders feeling bloated and generally queasy. They all took the protein an hour prior to training but still found the cheaper products hard to stomach. There may be cheaper alternative proteins on the market that compare well to their higher end brands but out of the 4 different products we tried, we still prefer to pay that bit extra for a better product.

Way to save money: If your looking to skimp on the price of a product save your money on buying cheaper milk rather than the protein itself.

Summary of all products:

Cheaper Protein: Powdery (4/4) Flavour Good (1/4) Flavour Bad: (3/4) Bloating: (4/4) After Taste: (4/4)
